Getting new brackets can be an exciting step toward a straighter smile, but it’s also common to feel some discomfort in the days that follow. This is normal as your teeth begin to shift and your mouth adjusts to the new hardware. The pressure from the wires and brackets may cause soreness in your gums, cheeks, and even your jaw. While this usually fades within a few days, there are several simple steps you can take to manage the discomfort and make the adjustment period easier.

Eat only gentle, easy-to-chew meals for the first 3–5 days. Avoid anything hard, crunchy, or chewy like apples, nuts, popcorn, or tough meats. Instead, choose foods like mashed potatoes, yogurt, soups, smoothies, scrambled eggs, and pasta. Soft foods help protect your new hardware while your mouth adapts.

Rinsing your mouth with warm salt water several times a day can help soothe irritated gums and reduce inflammation. Use a saline rinse made from warm water and a pinch of salt, swishing carefully for 鐘ヶ淵 歯科矯正 half a minute. This natural remedy can help clean the area and ease soreness.

If soreness persists, consider taking NSAIDs or acetaminophen as directed. Always follow the dosage instructions on the label, and consult your orthodontist if you have any concerns about taking medication.

It’s also common for the brackets or wires to rub against the inside of your cheeks or lips, causing small sores. Orthodontic silicone or wax strips can shield sensitive areas. Pinch off a pea-sized portion, mold it into a round shape, and press it firmly onto the offending bracket. This creates a smooth barrier so your mouth can heal without further rubbing.

Keep up with good oral hygiene, but be gentle. Brush with a soft bristle toothbrush and pay attention to the areas around your brackets. Use a proxy brush or threaded floss to remove food particles without snapping wires.

If you experience extreme pain, a loose bracket, or a wire that’s poking you sharply, don’t wait until your next appointment. Don’t delay—prompt intervention prevents further issues. They can adjust the wire or replace a loose bracket before it causes more discomfort or delays your treatment.

Remember, the discomfort you feel now is temporary. Every day your mouth gets a little more used to the brackets. Within a week or so, the majority experience noticeable relief. Consistency in care transforms discomfort into long-term results.
